Description: So, after what felt like a century (seriously, how long have we been waiting?), Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre finally dropped their long-hyped collab album, Missionary, on December 13, 2024. Death Row, Aftermath, Interscope—yeah, the whole gang’s here. First time the two legends have teamed up for a full project since Doggystyle, and guess who’s still running the boards? Yep, Dr. Dre, like he ever left.
Missionary is basically a love letter to that classic West Coast sound—G-funk all over the place, but with some new-school polish. Sixteen tracks deep, and a couple really smack you in the face: “Outta Da Blue” is pure Snoop swagger, “Gorgeous” brings in Jhené Aiko for those chill vibes, and “Last Dance with Mary Jane” is wild—a Tom Petty flip with Jelly Roll throwing in vocals. Didn’t see that coming, honestly.
The guest list? Stacked. Eminem and 50 Cent pop up on “Gunz N Smoke” (so yeah, big early 2000s energy), Method Man and Smitty jump on “Skyscrapers,” and outta nowhere, Sting shows up on “Another Part of Me.” Like, is there anyone not on this album?
Now, critics are doing what critics do—some love it, some can’t help but nitpick. The Times was all over it, calling out “Outta Da Blue” and “Thank You” as highlights. Others say it’s a little too eager to blend throwback with new stuff, maybe trying a bit too hard to please everyone. Fair point, I guess.
Chart-wise, Missionary didn’t exactly break the internet, but it landed at #20 on the Billboard 200 with 38k units the first week (about 20.5k actual sales—people still buy albums? Wild). That’s Snoop’s first top-20 since Bush back in 2015, so not bad for the old dogs.
Oh, and there’s a short film too—because why not? Dave Meyers directed, Method Man narrates, and pretty much everyone who matters in hip-hop shows up at some point. It’s got that glossy, cinematic look, tying into the album’s whole vibe.
End of the day, Missionary isn’t out here trying to reinvent the wheel like Doggystyle did, but it’s a solid flex from two legends still doing their thing. Not every track’s a banger, but it’s a reminder that Snoop and Dre can still cook up magic when they feel like it.
